Good Driving - UK

A686 Penrith to Haydon Bridge
If travelling to Newcastle via the M6 (Carlisle) and the A69 across, try cutting the corner from Penrith (M6 junction 40) to Haydon Bridge, along the A686. There are good views on a clear day and it will hardly increase your journey time. The road is a super conbination of sweeping bends and hairpins as you climb up and over the pass (cafe at the top of course).

The N82 St.Etienne to Annonay
This is a good run climbing up and over the Col de la Republique and down the other side. The road surface is smooth and there are a number of fast sweeping bends and a few hairpins.
Ideal if you are heading down towards the Med. and want a bit of relief from the motorway monotony.
There is a B&B Hotel at St.Etienne, or better still, why not stop at this Auberge du Grand Bois at the summit. The rooms are very reasonably priced, basic but clean and the restaurant produces great food - it goes down well with a bottle of Crozes-Hermitage!

[ Morgan on the Klausen ] The Klausen Pass
This was a famous hillclimbing course, many years ago. Situated on the road between Linthal and Altdorf it is well worth a run out if you're in the area. Make sure the upper sections are open, to avoid disappointment.
